Half Moon Study
Twelve tiles squared, one ink, endless weather — a love letter to the Bauhaus tile games.
About the piece
Every cell of the grid gets one of four fates: a quarter circle, a half, a dot, or nothing at all. Each tile is then spun to a chance rotation. The rules fit on an index card; the outcomes never repeat.
It is the studio’s quietest piece and its most requested — designers love it because it behaves like a textile, and collectors love it because it never sits still.
Details
Printed with a single cobalt ink on warm-white cotton, so the whole piece hums in one key. Tiles that fall on the sheet’s edge are clipped honestly — the crop is part of the composition.
A second colourway in ink-black is released to the mailing list each winter.
Deal the tiles
Weighted chance assigns each cell its shape; empties keep the rhythm breathing.
Spin them
Quarter-turn rotations randomise the flow while the grid holds the frame.
One-ink print
A single cobalt pass on warm cotton; nothing to register, nowhere to hide.
“Half Moon hangs in our hallway and guests always assume it’s vintage — then lean in and realise it can’t be. That double-take is the whole point.” — Jonas Weber, collector, Hamburg
