What I’m sketching this month
May’s sketchbook has a theme I didn’t plan: harbours. Halftone water, breakwaters tiled like a Bauhaus game, gulls reduced to three strokes. I spent a week on the coast and came home with forty pages of waves trying to be grids.
The breakwater tiles
The current favourite is a Half Moon descendant: concrete tetrapods abstracted into quarter-tiles, printed mentally in harbour-grey with one signal-red cell per sheet. It doesn’t exist in code yet — it’s still at the cardboard-tile stage, which is my favourite stage, the one where everything is possible and nothing is proofed.
A new dark ground
Alongside the harbours, a second night piece is plotting. Star Sphere taught me how far pale ink can go on navy; the new series pushes the ground toward black-green and the points toward chartreuse. Early renders look like algae with ambition. I’m keeping it.
Both series should reach the work wall by autumn. The mailing list sees them first — that’s the deal.
